Treasures You Find in the Woods

Last September, Hanna and I went for a walk in the woods. I shared some photos with you in that link and also in the post here about the thousand-year-old olive tree that although looks the worse for wear is still alive.

What I hadn’t shared and can’t believe I never posted were the other photos from that day. The reason I didn’t is that we were trying to research the story behind this old building and the spring. Is it an old house or perhaps a distillery that used the water from the spring? Hanna said that it may be an old house that shows on one of the maps of the property (we’ll check on that). Whatever its original use was, I love standing inside the remains and pondering its past. Who lived there? Or worked there? How old is it? Why was it abandoned? Why hasn’t anyone taken care of it?

If this spring could talk and tell us of all the people that have stopped to partake of its cool fresh water.

Was it a house and the farm animals lived in the stables below the main floor of the house? Hmmmm.

This past Sunday Hanna, Bob, and I went for a hike back to the building. Bob wasn’t with us the first time so it was great to have him see it for himself. Along with all the other finds along the way. Even though I took all the photos above last September I had to take more.

The trees and plants are certainly trying to reclaim it.

How I would love to restore it. To somehow hear the stories of the original occupants. Since neither of those is possible I guess I will just keep visiting it while it is still standing…and take more photos.

  1. This is awe inspiring. To walk and find something like this is like stepping into a time machine. I’d stay there all day lost in wonder. So many stories waiting to be imagined! Hints of tales and beauty. Absolutely perfect post! I’m so glad you went back. I’ll look forward to what else you find under the ivy!
